International Womens Day

March 8th 2014 is International Womens Day!

While it might not have the recognition of Mothers Day or Valentines Day, it is still no less important. Since 1911 this day has served as a way to honour and celebrate the achievements of women whether it be in politics, economy or the arts. In some countries it is a National Holiday, to recognise the social and political struggles that women have faced for centuries. The sending of flowers and gifts to an important woman in your life shows you respect her contribution to the world. The custom of giving the  Mimosa flower can be traced to Italy around 1946.

The Mimosa Flower

This bushy shrub grows in Mediterranean climates and in tropical regions such as Australia.. It will flower in England around April/May – weather dependent!! The ideal soil is neutral to acid. It is available as a cut flower ands its blooms are also harvested  for honey and perfume. Take a trip to the premium cosmetic store L’Occitane en Provence and you will recognise this wonderful blossom.

The yellow is said to symbolise the warmth and brightness of the sun and to represent the nurturing qualities that so many women display. So whether we choose to send flowers or gifts to the women who mean so much to us this International Women’s Day, let us use this day to become aware of how far we have come as women and to celebrate what we have accomplished!
